Crone's Cairn - Danger of Drowning
A Stone Turned in the Crone’s Cairn Series | A 'Myth' Stone
Crone Stone Name: Mermaid
Cycle: Maiden
Stage of Maureen Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey: Road of Trials
Author’s Notes
“The daughter aspect of Myth is the Mermaid. She represents your imagination …”
~ Carol Lee Campbell, Creator of the Crone Stones
Campbell says when you pull this stone, it suggests the “submerged princess” is calling to you, encouraging you to tap into your “ocean of potential."
When I pulled this stone a year ago or more, I did not see my ocean of potential … or did I?
Perhaps I didn’t trust myself to believe it.
Potential can feel like drowning—not because it harms you, but because it asks you to go deeper than you’ve gone before.
“I’m in danger of drowning, but naively I go.”
This is the piece that came out of that moment—my first attempt to name what the ocean of potential felt like.

Danger of Drowning
By the sea, I imagine great depths. Salt spray, a tantalizing gift. Beneath the waves, I meet silence. Fear wells … it’s just me in an ocean of unknown— on the sea. I sink into acceptance— breathe in and hold. I am in danger of drowning, but naively I go. Swim. Dive deeper. Be brave. Open your mind—and stay brave. It’s the darkness I fear. I cannot see. I reach for the unknown; it reaches for me ... and holds me ... —the sea.

Writing still scares me. But I keep diving anyway.
How do you navigate the unknown?
What helps you move through the dark?
