Author’s Notes
We tend to succumb to cultural or societal rules when we feel something missing from our lives, or when options are not in view.
Carol Lee Campbell, creator of the Crone Stones, suggests we all fantasize about a better place, a better way. But it is the ‘daydreamer’ who actively shifts consciousness to escape the stresses of everyday life.
I recall smiling … no, smirking, when I drew the Daydreamer stone.
Challenging rules was a mantra spoken to me as early as I could remember the meaning of words.
Not a challenge for the sake of creating chaos. More a curiosity. A whisper. A question: “Do I understand your rules? Do they help or hinder my growth?
Rules were always fine for me—unless harm came from them.
So when I drew this conformity stone—this escape from reality stone—it inspired whimsy, for lack of a better word. I felt fancifully free to live where I was comfortable—making my reality checks as life unfolded.
Reality Check came from the the fanciful challenge of living by rules … not mine, but those who thought they knew better.
I hear these same words of Reality Check differently, today.
REALITY CHECK
Across the waters, fairies call
among larkspur dressed in blue.
Bid me come—cross silver clouds—
to wisp forgotten you.
I cannot swim.
I cannot sing.
I cannot hear your words.
I cannot fly.
I will not lie—
unless you want me to.
Into the waters, fairies fall
from larkspur drowned in blue,
and I am lost in silver clouds,
never changing hue.

Was it what you expected?
Do you feel an irony?
Is it wrong to be lost in silver clouds?
Silver is one of my favorite hues.
Tell me—what colors have carried you through your own reality checks?
